Speaking for Earth with Dr. Vakoch

A comprehensive look at Doug Vakoch's impactful career, highlighting his primary research focus on interstellar message construction (METI)—the practice of designing messages to send to potential extraterrestrial civilizations. A key theme of Vakoch's work is his interdisciplinary reach, as he fluidly moves across the arts, humanities, and sciences to engage diverse audiences in contemplating this complex topic. The goal is not just to discuss the technical aspects of METI, but to use it as a powerful lens through which to examine what it means to be human. Following the overview, the session will become interactive, featuring a question and answer period where participants can reflect on and discuss what specific messages they might choose to send and, critically, what those proposed messages inherently reveal about our species. Organization: SCHOOL OF PSYCHOLOGY. Wednesday, January 7, 2026, 11:00 AM – 11:50 AM. Showalter Hall Room 109, Showalter Hall Event Space.
