LIFE Lecture Series at San Elijo

Lecture/Symposium Lecture: Eyewitness Testimony: When Can We Trust It? Dr. John Wixted, UCSD, Most people believe that eyewitness memory is simply unreliable. However, eyewitnesses typically provide extremely reliable evidence during the initial, uncontaminated memory test that occurs early in a police investigation. This is true even for most of the wrongful convictions that were later reversed by DNA evidence. All forensic evidence, including eyewitness memory, is unreliable when it is contaminated. Some forensic evidence; DNA, fingerprints, and, surprisingly, eyewitness memory, is reliable when it is not contaminated. Organization: LIFE. Event Contact Name: Sally Foster.
