Science on Tap: Underground Time Machines

Monday, November 10, 6-7 p.m. at Chapman Crafted Beer (123 N Cypress St, Orange, CA), Join us for the last Science on Tap of Fall semester, "Underground Time Machines: How Caves Record Earth's Climate History," featuring Dr. Kathleen Johnson, Professor of Earth Systems Science at UCI. Deep in remote caves across Southeast Asia, stalactites and stalagmites are quietly recording thousands of years of climate history—stories that could help us prepare for future climate change in regions where billions depend on seasonal rainfall. Dr. Johnson will reveal how these cave formations preserve detailed signals of past monsoon variability. She'll also share tales of the adventurous fieldwork—involving close encounters with bats, giant spiders, snakes, and leeches—and the painstaking labwork required to unravel the geochemical clues preserved in these ancient stalagmites. Discover how these underground time machines help us decode Earth's climate past to better understand our future. CHAPMANU SCIENCE ON TAP is… Organization: Schmid College of Science. Open To: Alumni, Faculty, General Public, Staff, Students. RSVP is Required? No. Monday, November 10, 2025, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM. OFF CAMPUS.

IQS Public Talk - Understanding the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics by Justin Dressel

Abstract: Quantum mechanics was developed to describe the very small: atoms, subatomic structure, and fundamental particles. How big can things become while still showing fundamentally quantum behavior? This year's Nobel Prize was awarded to three researchers who had the audacity to show that macroscopic collections of charges moving in a supercooled electronic circuit can still behave quantum mechanically, allowing us to engineer macroscopic artificial atoms: John Clarke, John Martinis, and Michel Devoret. This talk will tell their story, what they showed, and how their demonstration has now become one of the cornerstones of modern superconducting quantum computation. Organization: Schmid College of Science. Open To: Alumni, Faculty, General Public, Staff, Students. RSVP is Required? No. Tuesday, November 11, 2025, 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM. Killefer Conference Room A.

Research Shadowing and Capstone (SSLC)

It is event where students can go and meet with students in research and learn about the amount of time commitments each lab usually has per week. This will make it easier for those with jobs who want to have an idea for how to balance work with research. It also will provide a look ahead for 1st-3rd years about what to do years in advance for capstone prep. Organization: Schmid College of Science. Wednesday, November 12, 2025, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM. Keck Center McCardle Collaboration Steps, Keck Center McCardle Collaboration Steps (Top landing), Keck Center McCardle Collaboration Steps (1st floor landing).

SSLC - College Timeline

The event will inform students, based on their grade level, what they should be focusing on career-wise. For example, first-years begin talking with professors who do research that is interesting to you. And juniors begin to apply to internships and think about post-grad options. In the end we will have a checklist for students. Organization: Schmid College of Science. Friday, November 14, 2025, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM.
