Ford Professor in the Department of Sociology and the founding Director of Stanford's Institute for Advancing Just Societies. Dr. Jiménez will address the question: Are We Still a Nation of Immigrants?
Professor Jiménez's research and writing focus on immigration, policy, assimilation, social mobility, and ethnic and racial identity. He has written three book on these topics: States of Belonging: Immigration Policies, Attitudes, and Inclusion (Russell Sage Foundation Press, 2021) (with Deborah Schildkraut, Yuen Ho, and John Dovidio), The Other Side of Assimilation: How Immigrants are Changing American Life (University of California Press, 2017), and Replenished Ethnicity: Mexican Americans, Immigration, and Identity (University of California Press, 2010). Zapata's presentation examines three public art projects that honor communities affected by political violence, displacement, and erasure. It explores how public art preserves memory, challenges oppressive narratives, and supports social change, identity, and collective rebuilding.
