SSC Wolf Talk: Travel that Changes You
October Wolf Talk and Noon Forum Discussion: Travel That Changes You: Cambodia, Genocide, and the Power of Being There.
Dr. Steven Usitalo, joined by Dr. Erin Fouberg, will present an emotional account of their faculty-led study abroad journey to Cambodia, an experience that profoundly reshaped how students engage with history, memory, and ideally global citizenship. The group of NSU students, alumni, and Aberdeen community members, visited some of the most haunting sites of the Cambodian Genocide, including Phnom Penh’s infamous S-21 prison, where the Khmer Rouge systematically tortured and executed thousands. At one of Cambodia’s many Killing Fields — a place of unimaginable violence — Steven Usitalo delivered an on-site lecture, allowing students to confront history in the very place where it unfolded. This kind of immersive, place-based learning transcends the classroom, offering students not only academic understanding but a deep, personal reckoning with one of humanity’s darkest chapters - and one…
