Webinar on Best Practices for Hosting Family Weekends
Family and supporter weekends require significant coordination, resources, and campus collaboration. Yet across higher education, many institutions struggle to move these events beyond logistics-heavy schedules, repetitive programming, and engagement that drops off after the first year. This webinar will provide a fresh, research-informed framework for designing Family Weekend experiences that feel purposeful, emotionally resonant, and aligned with institutional priorities—without adding more work or burnout for campus planners.
The presenter will guide participants in reframing the central planning question from “What events should we offer?” to “What relationships are we building, and why?” This session will explore strategies to overcome challenges such as:
Declining or inconsistent attendance beyond first-year families
, Programming that feels passive or transactional
, Limited motivation for families to return after orientation
, Difficulty engaging campus partners in shared ownership
, …

The Noon Forum is held in the NSU Beulah Williams Library Round Room from 12-1pm on Wednesdays and is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences.

Student Government Association Meeting
The NSU Student Government Association (SGA) serves as the governing body/voice of the pack, representing all Northern students. Functions of SGA include overseeing the creation and recognition of all organizations, delegating General Activity Fee fund allocation on campus every spring, representing NSU at South Dakota Student Federation meetings, and serving as the bridge between the student body and the South Dakota regental system. SGA meets weekly during the academic year and welcomes all students, Northern employees, and community members to attend. For more information, stop by their office in the Hub on the second level of Avera Student Center, or visit their social media.
Open Forum is at the beginning of every meeting. All Northern students are invited to bring their questions or concerns to SGA during Open Forum.
Meetings are open to the general public unless the SGA goes into a closed session. Business regarding students and student concerns occur during these meetings.

Circle Program Monthly Smudge
Hí?ha?ni wašté – It’s a good day! We warmly invite you to join the NSU Circle Program as a campus community for our monthly smudging, 12:15-12:30 PM in The Circle Program room (MJ112) and Technology Center Courtyard.
Smudging is a sacred tradition involving the burning of sacred plants. It’s a way to cleanse, reflect, begin anew, and gather in a good way—as we begin a fresh start to the month.
Participating in or witnessing this practice is a meaningful way to show respect for Indigenous cultures and build community together. Please contact Lara.Nelson@northern.edu for additional information.

NOTE: CVs are briefly addressed in this session; students who have CV questions are encouraged to make a career advising appointment – there will be a specific CV workshop closer to the Teacher Job Fair in the Spring semester.
