The MEDLIFE Research Panel gives students the opportunity to learn about the research being conducted by their professors and faculty members, as well as how they can become involved. William Butler Yeats talked about the early years of the 20th century as a time when things were falling apart, a time when the best lacked all conviction and the worst were filled with passionate intensity. Are we approaching such times today? Is civilization about to collapse around us? And, if so, what’s the best way to face such a world? At this forum, Ken Blanchard, emeritus professor of political science, will discuss the indications we might be headed toward civilizational collapse and suggest strategies of dealing with catastrophes ranging from hyperinflation to nuclear war to the Zombie apocalypse. Join us for what should be a passionate and intense presentation.

Common Read Lecture
Northern State University will welcome No. 1 New York Times-bestselling author, award-winning educator, founder and philanthropist Sharon McMahon as the keynote speaker for the Larry and Julie Poeppel Family Common Read Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2026, in the Harvey and Cynthia Jewett Theater in the Johnson Fine Arts Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Sharon McMahon is a longtime government and law teacher who provides daily insights on current events, political misinformation, the history and function of the U.S. government, and ways to support democracy.

Noon Forum - What's in the Governor's Budget?
The Noon Forum for Wednesday, December 9, 2026, will be presented by Julie Johnson. Johnson is a regular at the SD Legislature advocating for issues of concern to NE South Dakota and NSU. She is in the Appropriations Committee almost every day. The 2027 Legislative Session really kicks off when the Governor gives his Budget Address on December 1, which is his proposed budget. This conversation will outline what the Governor is proposing in areas of interest to us, so we can understand it and follow along when the Legislature begins on January 12, 2027.

Commencement - 2026 December
Northern State University will celebrate the accomplishments of its graduates at Winter Commencement, set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, in the Johnson Fine Arts Center.
The ceremony is open to the public, and no tickets are required. Doors will open at least one hour before the event. The ceremony is expected to last about 90 minutes. Guests are encouraged to stay through the end to honor all graduates.
For those unable to attend in person, the event will be streamed live via multiple platforms. The ceremony will be livestreamed through the NSU Facebook page, and broadcast locally on Midco channel 12 and NVC Channel 12. The broadcast will also be available channel 588 on Midco.
Live captioning will be provided on screen at the venue, as well as online through Facebook and the graduation webpage.
