WMA Wilderness First Aid Feb. 23-24

This is a 20-hour wilderness first aid course. During this course, attendees will get information about first aid in a wilderness context. UAF CAUSE Listening Sessions

University leadership will host a staff listening session to provide an opportunity for employees to ask questions about the upcoming election, the unionization process, technical considerations and any other related topics. The goal of this session is to create an open, respectful space for dialogue. Rather than a formal presentation format, the conversation will take place in a roundtable or circle setting to encourage shared discussion and minimize hierarchy between leadership and staff. Know Your Rights: Immigration Enforcement

Heba El-Hendi, senior director of Refugee Assistance and Immigration Services at Catholic Social Services, and Cindy Woods, senior staff attorney for immigrants’ rights at the ACLU of Alaska, will discuss the legal framework of immigration, individual rights when interacting with federal officials, and ways to safely serve as bystanders and legal observers. Participants will learn what the law says and how to respond in real-world situations. This event is being held in Gruening 202. LEO Network – Helping to Understand Environmental Vulnerability and Change

The LEO Network was originally developed as a tele-consultation tool, to provide referrals on questions related to wildlife, plant, weather or community change. Practicing partnership: co-production and boundary spanning in rural Alaska

The UAF Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy and Dr. Elizabeth Figus are hosting a dialogue on Feb. 27 from 1-5 p.m. called, “Practicing Partnership: co-production and boundary spanning in rural Alaska.” This four-hour dialogue will bring together graduate students, staff, and faculty to discuss the nuts and bolts of implementing co-production and boundary spanning frameworks in research. Dr. Figus will describe details of her experiences with co-production research. Participants will be invited to discuss their experiences and plans for future work. Underwater storms: How harmful algal blooms form and their impacts on Alaska's oceans

GINA and ASF, in partnership with ACCAP, will be hosting a Virtual Alaska Weather Symposium webinar in March on harmful algal blooms (HABs). Dr. Thomas Farrugia, Scientific Program Manager, AOOS, Alaska Harmful Algal Bloom Network Coordinator, will discuss how HABs form in Alaska waters, how they are monitored and researched, and what needs to be done to mitigate this threat. Anthropology Colloquium Series: Initial results from a participatory Community Asset Mapping Project

Dr. Jennifer Hays will present findings from the 2024 Nyae Nyae Community Asset Mapping Project in Namibia, a participatory study with the Ju/’hoansi of the Nyae Nyae Conservancy. Based on interviews across 36 villages, the research highlights how community members value their traditional knowledge, skills, culture and resources as vital assets. Hays will discuss the project’s results and implications for development practice, government policy and Indigenous self-determination.
