Axel Timmermann: Seminar on past climate impacts on human evolution
Join Axel Timmermann, director of the IBS Center for Climate Physics at his seminar on past climate impacts on human evolution. Timmermann writes:
Our genus Homo emerged in Africa 2-3 million years ago during a time of climate cooling and increasing glacial cycles. How early humans adapted to these disruptions remains a mystery. This seminar introduces numberical models that simulate dispersal, adaptation, and interbreeding, using paleo-climate simulations to explore climate's role in human evolution.

Love Over Law: Indigenous Resistance to Policing Intimate Relationships on the Colorado River Indian Reservation
In the early 20th century, officials on the Colorado River Indian Reservation and at local boarding schools monitored the intimate lives of Indigenous Peoples, aiming to reform relationships, suppress desires, and enforce settler norms. Despite this intrusive oversight, the Mohave and Chemehuevi resisted, forging relationships that defied these expectations. This presentation explores these tensions and acts of defiance, offering insights into Indigenous resistance to settler-imposed norms. A brief Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) meeting will follow the event.

Circumpolar Music Series Hosts Asikluk Topkok and the Pavva Iñupiaq Dancers
On Tuesday, March 18 at 11:30 a.m. in the Davis Concert Hall, the Circumpolar Music Series will host Asikluk Topkok and members of the Pavva Iñupiaq Dancers as part of the Department of Music's Alaska Native Music course. In this event, aspects of Iñupiaq culture, song, and dance will be discussed and demonstrated. The Pavva Iñupiaq Dancers are residents of the Fairbanks area and were formed to preserve the culture and traditions of the Iñupiaq peoples through song and dance. Sharing our culture through performances to both Alaska Native and non-Native peoples help us keep strong in our heritage. Fairbanks is in the interior of Alaska and the name "Pavva," in Iñupiaq means 'away from shore, landwards, toward the mountain' was chosen. The group chose this name because they live away from the Northern region where their parents and grandparents originally lived. Although most of the Iñupiaq people in Fairbanks may have danced with family or other dance groups, they formed the Iñupiaq dance group in 1999 to be…

Guest Concert: Marc-Frédéric Indorf, organ
Join us for a special concert featuring the Davis Concert Hall pipe organ!
Opening the show, Sean Dowgray will join Marc-Frédéric Indorf to perform a piece for organ and percussion by the French organist, Thierry Escaich. Born in 1965 and recently named organist of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Paris, Escaich is internationally recognised for his compositions and energetic improvisations. The selected piece, Ground II, is part of a series of pieces for various ensembles, all of which are based on the English musical tradition called a ground. A ground is a repeated motive that underlies the rest of the music, very much like the bass line in Pachelbel’s famous Canon in D. However, instead of emphatically repeating the motive, Escaich builds around it and hides it amongst various sounds, timbres and rythmes.
Though very different in style and conception, the improvising nature of this piece segues smoothly into the musical improvisations prepared by Indorf to accompany the classic silent film from 1922: …
