Seeds of Conflict: Japan and China - A Public Lecture by Dr. Erin Brightwell

Why are Japan’s relations with its neighbors so complicated today? How did these conflicts begin? Japan’s role in East Asia today—from its claims to disputed territories to its acknowledgment of wartime atrocities—is a sensitive subject for many. However, this is partly due to a complicated history that predates the modern nation. Dr. Erin Brightwell, associate professor of premodern Japanese literature at the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor, explores competing representations of China in Japan, from their premodern origins to their impact on the contemporary world. UAF Theatre & Film invites you to attend a presentation on April 9 from 1-2 p.m. by Chris Reynolds, a sculptor, fabricator, and special effects technician, working in the film and television industry. Reynolds fashions rocks, architectural elements, creatures, terrain, props, special effects, and sets of everything from prehistoric landscapes to sci-fi spaceships. In this talk held in Rasmuson 340 Classroom, Reynolds will discuss the winding path from UAF to the film industry, how sculpture skills translate into real-world jobs, what it’s actually like to work behind the scenes on film sets, and why knowing how to build things is still one of the most valuable skills an artist can have in the age of digital everything. VAWS Webinar - Exploring Alaska’s Weather and Environment through Online Courses from COMET MetEd

GINA and ASF, in partnership with ACCAP, will be hosting a Virtual Alaska Weather Symposium webinar in April on COMET’s MetEd courses. Amy Stevermer, Scientist, and Patrick Dills, Scientist, from The COMET Program at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, will discuss the online training courses available on COMET’s MetEd website and provide up-to-date information about capabilities and products for meeting high-latitude observation challenges.
